Barry or 'Son of Charlie'

Inevitably got involved with models at an early age, and spent many a happy hour at the shop tinkering about, but unwittingly learning about the business!

Formally trained in electronics and worked with Ferranti Ltd until the seventies when he decided to join the family firm and took up radio flying.

Barry with "Kwik Fly"

A flying session at Ashbourne in Derbyshire in 1974. The model is a 'Kwik Fly', a championship winning design by Phil Kraft - an American aerobatic pilot, both model and full size. The radio gear was 'Simprop' and fairly crude by modern standards, but it worked well and was just about the best available at the time. The engine was a Merco 61 an excellent design, as proven by the fact that they are still in production 20+ years on!

Barry flying "Little Plank"

Barry with Stringalong

The 'Little Plank' glider - from an idea published in the American R/C Modeller magazine.

'Stringalong' - a fun biplane design from APS
(Aeromodeller Plans Service ) - now Nexus.

Then Came Yachts.....and some glory!

The World Marblehead Championships in 1978 in Durban.
Barry receiving the gold medal &
"South Africa Cup" which he won again in 1982
in Dunkirk, France - sailing the same yacht!
This Trophy has now been adopted for the
One Metre class World Championship.
